On 7th June the Institution of the Ombudsperson for Children's Rights together with the Human rights committee of Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, Embassies of Norway and Sweden and Lithuanian Dental Chamber organised an international conference “Role of the dentist in child rights’ protection system: good practice”.

The aim of the conference is to introduce Lithuanian specialists, whose working activities are associated with children, the protection of their rights and interests or the provision of services to them etc. and the society with the activities of Swedish and Norwegian specialists, strengthening the role of dentists in a field of child’s rights protection, also to improve the cooperation of dentists and competent state and municipal institutions, to ensure that all the children who suffer neglect, abuse or violence would be noticed and known for the competent authorities.

In 2011 ombudsmen for children in Sweden and Norway together with the dental professionals and scientists organised various campaigns and conducted activities that were aimed to draw the attention of dentists to their role and responsibilities protecting the children, informing competent authorities of the violation of children rights.

During the campaigns it was highlighted that the dentists have a possibility to notice and report a variety of possible violations of child’s rights, such as neglect, physical, sexual or psychological violence or abuse etc. It was also important to find out the reasons the dentists do not report competent authorities of possible violations of child’s rights and the measures needed to eliminate the gaps (prepare the information criteria, sign the cooperation agreements, improve the education programs for the dentists, etc.)

The participants of the conference will also be acquainted with the situation in this area in Lithuania.
